In India, stray dogs are common, but we have heard many stories of amazing people who have stepped up to help them. Pratima Devi is one of those people. At age 65, Devi makes her living by being a rag-picker. She only earns around 150 rupees each day, which equates to just a few US dollars, but shares those earnings with about 400 stray dogs.
Not only does Devi feed these dogs, but she makes sure they are healthy and vaccinated as well. She usually even puts their well-being above her own. She considers the dogs her children and has made it her life to take care of them.
Thankfully, when her story became well-known and she was nicknamed the “dog lady of New Delhi,” people have begun to help her and the dogs out by donating food and money. She has also been receiving help taking care of the dogs from an 18-year-old young man named Vivek for the past couple of years.
Devi does have concerns about who will look after the dogs after her, but for now, caring for these dogs has become her “religion.” That is definitely one I could subscribe to someday. Watch an interview with Devi and her beautiful dogs here:
