Tulita, NWT, Canada – Two children witnessed the incident, Erik Wolters, 12 and his younger sister. They described a dog in heat and another dog trying to mate with her, when a man came and grabbed the dog, tied a rope around his leash, tied it to the back of his pick-up truck and drove away downhill near the center of Tulita.
This happened on January 9th and they haven’t seen the dog since. Most likely he didn’t survive.

They moved to Tulita 6 months ago so they cannot identify the driver but they may be able to identify the truck. Their father, Dan St Jean reported the incident to RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police). So far, they haven’t been able to locate the driver or the pick-up truck – described as black and with a logo on the side.
Dan St Jean, who cares for 3 family Rottweilers plus 5 stray dogs, says loose dogs are a common problem and that the incident may have been prevented if the owners kept their dogs tied or fixed.

“Dogs have a natural instinct of mating, unless they’re fixed,” he said. “Then you get more dogs, and they are cute as puppies, but they don’t stay puppies, and they end being shot because there are too many in the community.”
He is currently trying to fly dogs to Yellowknife so they can be adopted. He’s been in contact with the NWT SPCA for this but so far, he hasn’t been able to strike a deal with any of the airlines of the community.
As for the dog who was dragged and the man who did this, police are asking whoever has any information to contact Tulita RCMP at 867-588-1111 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
