Most people wouldn’t think of Earth Day as being a holiday to celebrate with your dog. The truth is that it’s actually the perfect holiday to celebrate with your dog. You both get to be outside and help make the planet a better place to live. Check out the five ideas below to see how the two of you can celebrate.
1. Clean up dog park
If you notice that your local dog park is in need of a cleanup, gather some friends and spend the afternoon picking up trash. Keep in mind that some of the trash that you may find can be recycled. Consider placing a recycle bin by the trash can so other guests can recycle too. Not only will you feel accomplished, but you can breathe easier knowing that your dog has a clean place to play in.
2. Make toy out of reused materials
Consider reusing items around your house to make a new toy for your dog. Items such as socks and t-shirts can easily be turned into a toy. You can make a new rope by braiding strips of a t-shirt. Roll old socks up into balls and play fetch with your dog. The possibilities are endless and your dog will love having new toys to play with.
3. Go for a walk
This might be the perfect time to check out a new hiking trail in your area. Being able to enjoy nature on Earth Day is a great way to celebrate the holiday. You and your dog might be able to make some new friends on your walk.
4. Plant a garden
Maybe you’ve always wanted to grow vegetables or have a flower bed. This is the perfect opportunity to do so. If you happen to plant flowers and other plants, make sure that they are dog friendly in case if your dog accidentally gets into them. Your dog can finally put his digging skills to use by digging holes for the seeds. The two of you will enjoy watching your garden grow during the summer.
5. Donate old items to your local shelter
If your dog has toys that he doesn’t play with anymore or just got a new bed, donate the old items to your local shelter. You can also donate old sheets and towels, as they can be used for bedding and cleaning up after the animals. Think about adopting a new furry friend while you’re dropping off your items. Or bring a friend that has been thinking about adopting.
