In a backyard in New Mexico, three Pit Bulls suffered from horrible abuse from a family that was supposed to take care of them. They spent their lives chained outside until one day the family poisoned them. Two of them died and one survived but was surrendered to a neighbor because the family didn’t want him anymore.
We don’t know what happened to this horrible family and if they ever faced some animal cruelty charges. But we do know what happened to this Pit Bull and that’s a story worth telling.
The neighbor to whom he was surrendered took him to the Animal Humane New Mexico. When he arrived he was underweight and he had only one eye: he had lost the other one due to some severe trauma, they thought he might have been hit by a car. In addition to that, it was determined he had a severe case of glaucoma and scar tissue built up behind the remaining eye, so they had to remove it as well. He was now completely blind.
They calculated he was 5 years old and they named him “Raj,” which means “King” or “Emperor” in Hindi. They took care of him and immediately put him up for adoption. His name was appropriate because he ruled the shelter and everybody’s hearts in there. He was described as extremely expressive, affectionate and in need of love.
He was able to adapt to his new life as a blind dog very quickly. Considering what he had endured before he arrived, losing his remaining eye wasn’t an issue since he had people around him that cared for him and made him heal.
It took three months for him to find his forever home, but fortunately, this story has a happy ending. Alexandra Goslow and her boyfriend were the lucky ones who got to share their lives with Raj. They came across the Animal Humane website and when they went to meet him, despite of the fact he was a little shy at first, they knew they belonged together and took him home that same day.
Raj is now settled in his new home. He’s healed and he’s happy. He learned his way around and he learned to trust. In some Eastern European languages, “Raj” means “paradise,” and this meaning of his name also suits him. He came from hell but found a paradise in which he is the king. And he deserved it.
