“I have been told I am completely mad,” says Pat Senior.
Mad to some… a saint to others.
Meet Pat Senior. She is a grandmother of four and a wife to Charles. At one point in her life she was a singer. Now she is known as the Fairy Dogmother.
For the past 34 years she has been running Angels with Furry Wings, a rescue, out of her home in Bolton, U.K.
Gibson has been rescuing dogs since her first racing dog in 1981. Since that day she says she has spent over $2.7 million dollars rescuing dogs. She currently spends $43,000 a year on food and medical bills for all the dogs that come into her care. She currently has 19 dogs sleeping at her house. The garage has been fitted with dog beds, although many have taken up a spot in her living room. She doesn’t mind.
“I could have brought many properties with all that money but I would rather be me than someone doing nothing,” says Gibson. “If I think about it I could have had a pretty good lifestyle if I hadn’t spent all this money on the dogs. But I do it because you see these sad cases and when you manage to turn it around it is so worth it.”
“People were calling me and saying ‘If you don’t take the dog I will kill it’. I decided this is what I am going to do for the rest of my life.”
Her days begin at 6:30am and are non-stop until bed time. She describes meal time as very hectic, with bowls everywhere. Every week she buys 40 chickens for the small dogs and feeds the larger dogs a total of 2 large packs of ground chicken per day. She also walks the dogs that are able to and cleans up after everyone – She says she prefers to live in a house and not a kennel.
Last year Gibson adopted 8 strays from Romania and Hungary and transported them to her home on her own dime.
Gibson has made it her mission to save as many dogs as she can fit into her home. At one point she had as many as 26 dogs in her care. She loves helping them return to good health and to show them what true love is.
“It is an amazing feeling with you get them better and their eyes light up.”
