BRISTOL, Conn. — Last Wednesday, Veronica Reyes plead guilty to two charges of animal cruelty. In November of last year, a neighbor witnessed the 22-year-old woman hanging one of her two dogs from a tree in her front yard. She called Reyes’ landlord, who then called the police.
The police then recovered the bodies of the two Pit bulls from the backyard, where Reyes had buried them in trash bags. In December, she turned herself in and claimed that a mixture of marijuana and pain killers from a dental procedure had caused her to hallucinate. She added that it seemed like the dogs were actually telling her to do it.

A little bit later, Reyes changed her story and said she did it because she was under a lot of stress from depression following a break-up. Regardless of her explanations, animal advocates contributed over 10,000 signatures to a petition demanding she serve jail time.
Reyes’ sentencing is in May, where she is expected to face five years in prison. Animal advocates also hope to have an animal abuser registry up and running soon enough to add her to it.
