REGENSBURG, Germany — A 12-week-old Australian Shepherd puppy named Lia struck up an unlikely friendship with a one-week-old baby orphaned deer. A local farmer took the fawn to a family who had raised a deer before and they nursed it back to health, naming him Hansi. Lia is the family’s puppy.
The fawn, who was rescued by some farmers in Regensburg, was found abandoned near a field of hops. The tiny deer was unable to take care of himself, and would have most likely have died, had it not been found by the farmers when it was. Knowing the fawn could not fend for itself, one of the farmers knew of a family who had raised a deer before and took the tiny deer to them.
The family took the deer into their home and bottle fed him back to full health. But it was the family’s 12-week-old Australian Shepherd puppy Lia who really took to the little fawn. Lia cared for Hansi immediately and treated him just like one of her own. Three short weeks later, the two are inseparable and devoted friends, spending their days playing and cuddling with one another.
Regensburg photographer and microbiologist Anna Auerbach, 28, photographed the two adorable friends in a series of cute photos. Auerbach said the photoshoot took only about 30 minutes as there were so many perfect moments to capture.
“The two of them get along really well. Hansi sees Lia and the other dogs she is being brought up with as family,” said Auerbach.
Hansi and Lia are two of a kind.
