3D Systems has helped over 10,000 dogs just like Derby with their 3-D printed prosthetics.
If you didn’t see this video, your day is about to get a lot better. What a transformation.
3D Systems partnered with Rita Leibinger Medical in 2012 to fix a common problem in the hind legs of dogs caused by aging, trauma or genetics. Despite how frequently dogs are diagnosed with problems in their rear legs, it remains difficult to fix.
What’s so special about this method? The production costs are drastically reduced, thanks to 3-D printing. Surgery takes less time and recovery is quicker. With the new method, the ligament itself doesn’t have to be repaired; the implant changes how the force of walking is applied to the bone. The problem isn’t just solved, ligament issues cease to even be a factor in knee stability anymore, thanks to the implant.
“With this implant we experienced faster, more successful surgery and a faster recovery period.”

Since the partnership began, 3D Systems has manufactured implants for over 10,000 dogs! It isn’t limited to a certain breed, either! From Great Danes to pint-sized dogs like Jack Russells, they all enjoy the reclaimed spring in their step.
It’s taken 4 iterations of design, but thanks to 3-D printing, this wasn’t costly or time consuming. Teams from both companies worked together to improve the ease of application, appearance and the ability to accommodate long term bone ingrowth.
Derby’s legs are low to the ground, but that’s only his first pair. They were made this way so he could get used to using them. His fourth set of legs is in production and we can’t wait to see Derby try out his new legs!
Dr. Yves Samoy from Ghent University in Belgium worked with the 3D Systems manufacturing plant (also in Belgium) to perfect the surgical procedure.
This new implant allows for rapid bone ingrowth because of it’s open structure and less risk of infection. Couple this with the reduced production costs, and everybody wins, especially your dog.
“Unlike traditional manufacturing, there is no penalty for complexity or scale, so we are able to produce a wide range of implant sizes quickly and economically. 3D printing is the clear choice for better functional and scalable solutions, in healthcare and beyond.”

The plan doesn’t stop at dogs, future plans include kitties too!
