If you love Corgis and really, who doesn’t – then you should have been in Huntington Beach, CA this past weekend. The ninth “Corgi Beach Day” was held there and over 500 Corgis (some sources say 634 to be exact) took to the sand and surf. The SoCal Corgi Nation group holds this meet-up quarterly, but when the first one was held in 2012, apparently only 12 Corgis came for the party and now there were enough to stretch across almost an entire mile of the beach. Mr. Pickles, an 8-year-old Corgi was the official host of the event and one of the main reasons it all got started. His owners, the McLemores, adopted him a few years ago and started connecting with other Corgi owners about five years ago. They started as a small group of friends that came together for common causes such as crowdfunding for a pup in need or launching searches to help find missing pups.
The lucky pups and their owners came from all over the country for this one and signed in when they arrived. There was a costume contest, which included entrants dressed as a lifeguard, one as a shark, and even one as a VW bus. There was also a limbo game, which if you ask me, would be pretty hilarious considering their shorter stature, and plenty of adoring fans that just couldn’t wait to meet all of the Corgi cuties in attendance. There were even internet/instagram Corgi celebs, including Winston The White Corgi and Sneakers. The group sold memorabilia such as stickers, flags, and t-shirts with all of the proceeds going to a local rescue group called Queen’s Best Stumpy Dog Rescue. The next planned event is scheduled for July 11 and promises to be an even better celebration with a Corgi surfing contest and kissing booth! Sign me up!
