When Ashley Stewart and his family found ‘Dusty’ the kangaroo, his mother had just been hit by a car in a road accident. Knowing the orphaned joey wouldn’t stand a chance of surviving alone, they decided to take him home to their family farm in Wittenoom Hills, Western Australia, in a bid to keep him alive.
Luckily, Dusty went from strength to strength, and grew up into a happy and healthy roo – with a little help from the family’s dogs, Rosie the Collie and Lilly the Golden Retriever!
Only one hitch. Two-year-old Dusty now thinks he is a dog.
“He lives on the back patio. We’ve actually had to go and buy a third dog bed for him to sleep in because he used to pinch one of the beds from the dogs.”
The pups don’t seem to mind, though. According to the family, the dogs and Dusty are firm friends – they can’t get enough of each other. Mr Stewart added:
“He thinks Lilly is his mum, he’s always grooming her, they’re always together and if Lilly goes out of the yard he pines for her and sort of hops up and down the fence until he’s let out to go with her.”
Dusty even wears a reflective dog collar, after the family kept losing him at night time. Woof!
