Ever wonder why your dog spends so much time looking for just the right spot to do his “business”? A study in the journal Frontiers in Zoology shows that dogs prefer to relieve themselves in line with the earth magnetic poles.
After studying 70 dogs, made up of 37 breeds, over two years with 1,893 defications and 5,582 urinations analyzed researchers have shown that your dog prefers to “excrete with the body being aligned along the north-south axis,”
You’re probably wondering why your furry little friend needs to make sure he poops properly and so are scientists.
“It is still enigmatic why the dogs do align at all, whether they do it “consciously” (i.e., whether the magnetic field is censorial perceived (the dogs “see”, “hear” or “smell” the compass direction or perceive it as a haptic stimulus) or whether its reception is controlled on the vegetative level (they “feel better/more comfortable or worse/less comfortable” in a certain direction).”
This may seem like a trivial thing to study but it opens doors to a lot more research on animals using the magnetic poles for navigation and direction. This behavior can also be seen in birds, turtles, fish and even cows prefer to graze facing magnetic north-south
Now if you see your dog facing east-west next time you take him out for a walk don’t be worried, his doggie radar isn’t off. This behavior was only seen in dogs off leash in a wide open field. You’re still the most important thing in their life and pleasing you is more important than getting hung up on which way is north.
