Grandmother-of-eight Maggie Scorer and her seven-year-old Golden Retriever, Oscar, are seriously showing up their younger counterparts this month, by taking on a brutal 5000-mile cycle of the UK coast.
In fact, blink and you might miss them; the unstoppable duo have already powered through 1000 miles of British coastline and generated over $17,000 for two charities (Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research and ‘Sands’, a neonatal death charity) in the process.
The former is a cause especially close to Scorer’s heart – her son-in-law suffers from Myelofibrosis – a rare blood cancer disorder – and has previously received a bone marrow transplant which saved his life.
While Oscar may not be providing much man-power (he gets pulled around on the back of the bicyle), Scorer didn’t even contemplate leaving her beloved canine at home. She said:
“I wasn’t prepared to leave behind my dog so I thought that going by bicycle was the way to go… Oscar loves it. He just likes to sit in the back, look around, take it all in, and have a little bit of a snooze.”
