84-year-old Clarence “Clem” Schultz and his grieving family were yesterday given an ounce of happiness following the devastation caused by Thursday’s tornado in Fairdale, Illinois – a storm which claimed the life of two women, including Schultz’ wife, Geraldine.
The family’s beloved white German Shepherd, Missy, had gone missing during the storm and, despite a Facebook page set up to help locate her, no reports of her whereabouts had been reported for several days.
However, three days after the tornado, a ComEd crew member saw what he described as a ‘white shadow’ in a field, while driving. On closer inspection, he recognized Missy and immediately alerted the police of her whereabouts. The storm had left her understandably traumatized, and initially Missy ran away from police, who chased her for 2.5 miles before they finally managed to catch her, to reunite her with her family.
Mr. Schultz’ grandson, Tyler Rowan, said that his grandfather hadn’t let the dog out of his sight ever since her return, and comments from well-wishers have since flooded the Facebook page.
A Facebook page has also been created in order to help reunite other victims with animals still missing from the tornado.
