The puns are rolling in, but Caroline is definitely in the doghouse.
Caroline is a sweet black Labrador Retriever from North Carolina. Sweet Caroline. Her owners Michael and Ruby Smith rarely leave home without her. It was supposed to be a regular day for the trio, yet it didn’t quite turn out that way.
The three were out driving in the Smith’s ’88 Dodge Ram when Caroline, known for sometimes getting spooked, became frightened and tried to hide down by Ruby’s feet – who just happened to be driving the Ram that day. Caroline’s 90-pound body pressed on the pedal and that sent the truck speeding across a parking lot.
“…when she gets scared, she’ll go down on the floorboard of the truck,” explained Michael. He tried to pull her off the floor, “and before I could, we were wide open. We were probably going 50, 55 miles an hour.”
Scared for their lives, Ruby tried to steer the truck away from people and other cars. Before they knew it, they hit water.
“We hit the water, and I’m going ‘where in the name of god is this water coming from?'” Michael Smith said.
The truck smashed through a wooden fence and landed in John McNamara’s pool.
McNamara was startled by the commotion in his yard and couldn’t believe there was a truck in his pool. He told his wife immediately.
“Just laughed at me and said, ‘What are you doing, smoking or something?’ I don’t smoke. I said no, I mean it!” McNamara said. He explained that his first thoughts were if anyone was hurt and that he already had one heart attack this year and was hoping this wasn’t going to be the second.
Other than a few cuts no one was seriously injured. What about the Dodge? Well, that truck had to be retired. Caroline won’t be in the doghouse for long
“I don’t blame her for it,” said Michael. “Just one of them odd accidents that you read about in the newspaper or see on the news.”
