Some of you may remember that we featured Dean Potter on our website a little bit ago, because his dog, 22-pound miniature Australian Shepherd, Whisper, became the first ever to base jump. Whisper would ride in a protective backpack on Dean’s back when he took his jumps and the two shared an incredible bond. Their adventures were documented in a film entitled When Dogs Fly, which came out about a year ago. Even though Whisper joined him for most jumps, she was not with him this past Saturday.

Dean was the very definition of an adventurist – he enjoyed climbing, hiking, surfing, and of course, wing-suit flying. He fought for the ability to jump off the granite cliffs of Yosemite National Park in California and was renowned for his climbing, having broken records and receiving accolades for his achievements. It was his favorite place to be and participate in outdoor activities and his longtime girlfriend, Jen Rapp, spoke of it as his home. She and Whisper were his family.

Dean and another jumper, Graham Hunt, attempted their jump from Taft point on Saturday evening, but spotters feared something had gone wrong when they disappeared from sight and there was no sign of parachutes. It appeared that they were unable to clear a specific notch in one of the cliffs. They were found Sunday morning. We send all the good thoughts we can to their families, but also fondly remember Dean for his adventures with Whisper. Relive some of them here:
