A company in Turkey has created a vending machine that dispenses food and water for stray animals in exchange for recycled plastic bottles. People are prompted to throw away their plastic bottles into the machine, where it then releases food for homeless dogs and cats.
The cost of the recyclable goods, pays for the food that the machine produces. So the more the people recycle, the more animals the machine can feed. It is an innovative way to encourage the 14 million inhabitants of Istanbul, Turkey, to not only recycle but to aid the starving animals.
The company called Pudgeon came up with the concept as a means to bring attention to the extraordinary amount of stray animals in Istanbul. It is estimated that there are over 150, 000 strays roaming the streets of the city. Animal activists confirm that the problem stems from illegal animal smuggling and illegal pet stores.
Pudgeon is hoping that their vending machines will greatly increase awareness of the problem and encourage citizens to pressure the government for a long-term solution. For now though, at least a small step has been taken to ensure the animals are getting fed.
