In Meadow Vista, California, an unlucky bear decided to go after the wrong dog. Carl Moore saw the bear trying to get onto his deck and heard his Chihuahua, Lacy, yelping in fear. Even at age 73, Moore, an ex-Marine, is not the type of man to back down from a scary situation, and he was not about to let this bear take his beloved pet. He raised his hands at the bear, began yelling and screaming at it to try to deter it. Moore described the interaction and his words: “Rrraaaaaaa! Get out of here you bastard,” and he looked at me like ‘Go eff yourself.”

When that didn’t work, he took a swing and punched the bear square in the face. The bear was around 5 feet tall and probably around 300 pounds, but once Moore hit it, it took off running. His friend, John Sargent, who was present, said he wasn’t surprised by Moore’s actions and that he doesn’t think that bear will be coming back anytime soon. Moore has no regrets and says he would do it again, because Lacy and his other dogs are like his children and he would do anything to protect them. Fish and Wildlife advise calling them when such a situation arises, but Moore’s quick response saved his dog’s life.
