Connie Kolita is now considered a member of the Flying Pig Squadron, because she has run the marathon held in downtown Cincinnati twelve times and will be going for lucky number 13 this year. She attributes a good part of her success to having a great training partner – her Shiba Inu, Nakita. She adopted Nakita from an acquaintance back in 1999 and the two have been inseparable ever since. When Connie decided to start training for the Flying Pig, Nakita was right at her side. Together, they ran miles upon miles.
A few months ago, however, Nakita was injured when a neighbor’s dog attacked her. She was left unable to walk for a few days, so Connie decided to look into dog strollers as a means to help her get out and about like she was used to doing. Nakita wasn’t so sure about it at first, but soon grew to love her new wheels. Now that Nakita is 16, she can’t run like she used to, so Connie pushes her in the stroller while doing her training.
People in their neighborhood love to see them go by and will often stop them to chat. Some people are curious why Nakita is in the stroller, but they smile when they learn of their story. Connie loves that Nakita can still be with her for every step and will even be present on the sidelines, cheering her on at the race. Good luck to Connie running the Flying Pig on May 3!
