Pegasus is a beautiful Great Dane that wasn’t born into the greatest of situations. She was a product of irresponsible backyard breeding and the only one to survive from her litter. Pegasus was sick, however, and diagnosed with a pigment deficiency. The disease is known to cause deafness and blindness, amongst other problems, including early death. But, Dave Meinert, a South African filmmaker, wasn’t about to leave her to die and rescued her to give her the home she deserved.

Meinert is quoted as saying: “Rescuing her was a way for me to be sure she’d be looked after. For me, she had already been born – nothing was going to change that. By rescuing her, at least I could be certain that she wouldn’t be discarded.” Meinert has no idea how long they will have together, but he decided from the get-go that he would celebrate every day they did have together and made an amazing time-lapse of Pegasus’ life thus far.

He bought a dog-specific treadmill for Pegasus to ensure she gets plenty of exercise, because she can easily catch skin cancer from being outside for too long. Moreover, if she goes deaf or blind, it’s a safe place for her to walk and keep moving. He hopes that sharing their story will shed some light on the problems of unethical breeding, but still remind people of enjoying the moments as they come with the dogs they love.
