RALEIGH, N.C. — The woman who went viral online after she duct taped her dog’s mouth shut and posted it online appeared in court today.
In November, Katharine Lemansky posted a photo of a chocolate Labrador with its mouth duct-taped shut to Facebook. She posted a caption along with the photo that said, “This is what happens when you don’t shut up!!!” followed by a second that read “Dont panic everyone it was only for a minute but hasnt barked since… POINT MADE!!!”
After the post had been shared several hundred thousand times, police tracked her down to her home town of Cary, N.C. where they charged her with Class 1 Misdemeanor Cruelty to Animals. Since her dogs seemed to be well cared for, she was allowed to keep them.
If she is found guilty she could face up to 150 days in jail.
This morning she made her first appearance in court to fill out paperwork and apply for a public defender. She has yet to make a plea and is expected to return to court on January 5, 2016.
When asked for a comment, Lemansky said, “No comment, please, may I please do my paperwork? Please have a little respect for me. Just this much. Thank you.”
She also said her dogs were doing just fine.
