SUNDERLAND, England — Not every abandoned dog will receive the gift of a new home this Christmas, but one woman wants to ensure that the dogs that are left behind, can still indulge in the holiday spirit. Dog enthusiast Jan Brown, has spent countless hours knitting over 300 sweaters for abandoned dogs since 2010. Although she knits year round, she particularly amps up her production around Christmas time in order to knit enough festive outfits to keep the shelter dogs warm every holiday season.

When not knitting sweaters and hats during the holiday season, Jan works full-time knitting doggy clothing that she sells online. Jan quit her job in 2012 to have enough time to knit, and she donates all of the proceeds from her sales, to rescue centers across England. The funds she raises, have been a huge help for many shelters in buying supplies and clothes for the dogs. Most of Jan’s knits end up going to Greyhounds as the cold weather is particularly felt by them due to their thin fur coats.
Kerry Elliman from the Birmingham Greyhounds Protection reveals that Jan’s help has truly made a difference at the shelter and in the lives of countless dogs. Elliman says that thanks to Jan’s contributions, the shelter has saved a lot of money that they need to spend on vet bills for the Greyhounds. Jan admits that despite knitting the sweaters for no pay, it is well worth it. She has spent over 4,000 hours knitting hats, and sweaters for abandoned greyhounds but she wouldn’t trade it for the world. Jan says she loves seeing the homeless dogs all dressed up and cozy in her knits. You can purchase the homemade knitted goods from Jan’s website Knitted With Love.
