BUTLER COUNTY, Pa. — A veterinarian and owner had a big surprise earlier this month when they discovered that Tiki had enough underwear in her stomach to last a human over a week, and enough hair elastics to last over a year.
When Tiki, a black Labrador Retriever, had no appetite, her owners started to get worried. When she started vomiting and having diarrhea, they started to get very worried and took her to the Good Shepherd Veterinary Hospital.
When she failed to respond to the medication that is used for vomiting and diarrhea, she was sent for X-rays that revealed a large mass in her stomach. The doctors decided to perform surgery.
The two hour exploratory surgery uncovered 62 hairbands, eight pairs of underwear, a Band-Aid and four elastic bands, all having to be surgically removed from her stomach.
“I found this hairband attached to another hairband to another one to another one and other things,” said Veterinarian Dr. Hisham Ibraham.
Dr. Ibrahim compared the surgery to a magician pulling scarf after scarf out of a hat. His dog mom, Sara Weiss, said that Tiki is known to eat things. She once ate a Nerf dart but was able to pass it through her system.
Dr. Ibrahim also recently had to remove 15 pacifiers from another dog’s stomach, but nothing as extensive as Tiki’s collection. Tiki is recovering well after the surgery.
In May, another dog named Benno ate 23 live rifle rounds. Like Tiki, Benno fully recovered.
