You might find walking your dog rather monotonous (and in the Winter, downright frustrating), but for the millions of stray dogs in shelters, it can literally save their lives. Spending weeks and months in crates or cages with minimal exercise can lead to behavioural problems and depression.
That’s why couple Charlie and Cristina Saunders decided to found Walkzee, the first organization of its kind, connecting shelter dogs with pet lovers in search of a walking buddy.
Inspired by a day during their honeymoon in Hawaii in which they visited an animal shelter and took one of the dogs, Big Z, out for a day of fun, they began the foundation for their new venture on the plane home.
Walkzee is mutually beneficial for both walkers and walkees. Fresh air and exercise is always a good thing, and the dogs will become accustomed to extended human contact as well as being on a leash, which will be beneficial when being chosen for adoption.
The process is simple. You would search your local area for dogs in need of a walk, choose the date and time, and get ready to meet your new friend!
The Kickstarter is currently 5K past its $25K goal (yay!) and still rising! Here are some reward highlights:
$1: Your name on the “Best Friends of Walkzee” Page
$25: A rad doggie bandana!
$40: Be a Walkzee Ambassador in your city!
$100: A hoodie, a tshirt, and 2 bandanas!
This is FANTASTIC idea for dogs and log lovers, and I genuinely hope this reaches Canada as well. I’ll be keeping an eye on this project for sure!
