HAMILTON, Ontario — On July 9, a Shar Pei/Fila mix attacked and killed a local man in Hamilton. Matthew Brigmantas, either 32 or 33, was killed instantly in the street. Neighbours reported hearing Brigmantas’s screams for help and seeing the dog viciously attack him.
Although the dog, a Shar Pei mixed with Fila Brasileiro, is a Brazilian Mastiff known to be bred for aggression, a woman close to Brigmantas just told the CBC that the canine, named Junior, was not as vicious as it is being portrayed. Amanda Doucet says Junior was peaceful. For the dog to attack Brigmantas was out of character, she said.
According to city spokesperson Ann Lamanes, the city and animal control will wait until at least Sunday to find out if they will put down the dog. The coroner is now conducting additional testing, including toxicology and microscopy, to figure out the exact cause of death. Even if Junior did not kill Brigmantas, it could still be put down. The coroner confirmed that the dog attacked the victim.
As of today, an online petition has been signed by more than 6,200 people to prevent Junior from being euthanized and to help find him a loving home.
