So many animals in shelters wait day after day for someone to see them, choose them and take them home. It’s heartbreaking to think of all of the ones that are overlooked because of their breed or because of their age. But this is a story of hope, kindness and pure joy. It is the story of the dog that nobody wanted and the three women that decided to give her a home.

When sister Alice Goldsmith, sister Virginia Johnson and sister Veronica Medez lost their beloved 8-year old dog – Kate – after a sudden lymphoma diagnosis, they were devastated. The three nuns that live in Nyack, New York, decided to adopt a new dog that would brighten up their lives. But they had a very specific idea in mind: they wanted the dog that was less likely to be adopted.
So they went to the local shelter in search for the less wanted dog. And they found Remy, a 9-year old Pit Bull whose two disadvantages were being a senior dog and being a Pit Bull. But for the nuns, instead of making Remy less desirable, it only made her more. This was the dog they wanted to give a home to.

The sisters are all over 70 years old and they felt like caring for Remy the few years she had left. They said: “Here we are, three senior sisters, so we adopted a senior pet”. And they thought Remy felt it too: “these are going to be my people, I can tell. And we knew this was going to be our dog, we could tell”.
The executive director of Hi Tor Animal Care Center – the shelter they went to –, confessed he was surprised that three nuns were not intimidated by the idea of adopting a Pit Bull. As a matter of fact, this was so touching for the shelter’s staff, that a volunteer – Pauline Jarney – and a board member –Roberta Bangs – covered all of the adoption expenses.
And so, Remy found a home and the three sisters found a way to ease their grief. Remy is now shinning and happy. She has toys, comfortable beds, a backyard and three loving women willing to make her life everything she deserves. And more.
