INVERNESS, Fla. — A woman in Citrus County is very lucky to be alive after wrestling a seven foot alligator to save her dog. Lori Beiswenger went toe-to-toe with the alligator to save her 9-year-old dog Hope’s life.
“I wasn’t thinking,” Beiswenger said. “It was the dumbest, bravest thing I have ever done, but I wasn’t going to let her go.”
Beiswenger and her husband own Point O’ Woods Golf Course and this is where they spotted the alligator. Hope was being attacked by the gator and was losing the fight, as the large reptile pulled her into the water. That’s where her owner went in, neck deep, and grabbed the gator’s tail to pull it back on land. This worked and the alligator finally let go of Hope. Hope was then scooped up by a volunteer at the golf course with a shovel.
She suffered from several wounds and a severed artery, but after surgery she’s getting back to normal.
This is the third brush with death Hope has had. As a puppy she was almost put down before Beiswenger adopted her and she got hit by a car when she was two.
