SANTIAGO, Chile — A pregnant dog went above and beyond by allowing a malnourished 2-year-old boy to breastfeed from her after he had been abandoned by his mother.
The 2-year-old boy has been taken in by child welfare services after he was found breastfeeding from his neighbor’s pregnant dog, Reina. It is believed that the only reason the child was still alive was because of this wonderful dog.
Witnesses called police after they spotted the boy feeding from the dog at a mechanic’s shop in the desert port of Arica, about 1,000 miles north of the capital of Santiago.
Lory Escudero, the owner of Reina, was shocked when she discovered the boy.
“Everyone that is here, we’re all parents and if you saw what we saw from my position as a woman, as a mother, it was terrible,” Escudero told Sky News.
The child was taken to a hospital where it was discovered he was also suffering from a skin and lice infection, as well as malnourished. His mother showed up to the hospital intoxicated and she was unable to regain custody of him at that time. She was reported as being “dead drunk.”
Marcela Labraña, Chile’s director for National Services for Minors, told reporters that “here in Chile, in broad daylight, a situation that is happening is reprehensible and inhumane.” She went on to describe the situation as, “a story that gives us a lot of embarrassment.”
Without Reina and her motherly instincts, this story could have ended in devastation rather than embarrassment.
