When you’re a dog owner in a urban or suburban area, you come into contact with other dogs multiple times a day. It’s hard to know which dogs are friendly and which dogs might wish your dog harm. You’d be hard pressed to find a dog owner that hasn’t encountered a dog fight in their years as an owner. Dog fights are terrifying and are one of my least favorite sounds in the world. The one technique I’ve learned from trainers to stop a fight, might save my dogs life. It’s best remembered by one word:
When two dogs are fighting it’s extremely dangerous to intervene. If the owner of the other dog present, tell them to grab their dogs back legs, yes, just like a wheelbarrow. You do the same to your dog, and both pull them apart.
Why does this work? It throws the dogs off balance. Imagine being in a fist fight and someone grabbing your legs and pulling you. You would be too disoriented to keep fighting.
The second tip in situation will come in handy especially to those who live in rural areas or areas with a lot of homeless roaming dogs.
This is even more dangerous of a situation, so if your dog is being attacked and you are the only human around, it is advised you proceed with extreme caution. Only try this if no one else is available to help.
If your dog is being attacked, loop the leash around the canine aggressor lower abdomen. From there start pulling until you can find a fence or tree to latch the dog to. Once the first dog has been secured, pull the other dog using the wheelbarrow technique.
Dog fights are dangerous to humans, most dogs are in a defence mode and will not recognize they are biting you. Know the area you are walking in and carrying a walking stick in dangerous areas is advised.
