Hydrotherapy for Humans has been around since ancient times but only recently are we learning more about the amazing benefits for our animals.
Canine hydrotherapy is a form of hydrotherapy directed at the treatment of chronic conditions or general fitness in dogs. It allows dogs to work areas of their bodies that they normally could not put weight on. This makes it a great choice for dogs who suffer from hip dysplasia or even osteochondritis dissecans (OCD.) Hydrotherapy is also used for pre-op strengthening, post-op recovery, or working on congenital conditions.
It was first recognized by the horse racing industry after they found that cool sea water was greatly beneficial to the horses. Eventually, the Greyhound racing industry caught on, and now, hydrotherapy has been recognized as a fantastic treatment for all dogs in general. However, unlike the horses, A dog’s muscles benefit from the warming effects of heated water, and to the dogs, it seems more like playing than work.
