Kale Chips the beagle, is looking great these days, feeling happy and enjoying sunny days spent watching the squirrels. After losing an astounding 23 pounds, volunteers renamed the beagle after the healthy snack, so that he could get a fresh start with an original new name.
When the dog was surrendered by his elderly owner who could no longer care for him in January to Chicago animal rescue volunteers, One Tail at a Time, the beagle was very overweight. He weighed in at a whopping 85 pounds and actually had to be brought in on a wagon. He was so heavy that he could not get up and walk even 10 feet by himself without the use of a harness.
But jump ahead four months and the change in Kale Chips is astounding in both the dogs physical appearance and energy levels. He was put on a low calorie diet with high quality, high protein food. With swimming exercises, and a loving foster care home Kale Chips has made lots of progress. Happy Dog Barkery, a bakery for dogs in Downers Grove, Illinois also helped out with the beagles weight loss regimen. Kale Chips is now successfully able to walk half a mile a day on his own.
One Tail at a Time has been keeping track of Kale Chips progress and says “He’s much more mobile” and “we’re seeing so much of his personality and he’s a super happy (tail wags all the time) with a dash of stubborn beagle”.
Kale Chips is ready to be adopted into a Chicago area home, preferably a single family home willing to spend a lot of time with him so that he can keep on with his exercise and weight loss regimen, as he’s still got another 25 pounds to lose. One Tail at a time says that the dog “really likes people” and “gets along with other dogs”.
Despite Kale Chips fame, he is still looking for a home and you can apply to adopt him at One Tail At A Time rescue.
Chicago, is there some love out there somewhere for this adorable pup?
