A detection dog, or sniffer dog, is a dog that is trained to use their senses (most often their sense of smell) to find illegal drugs, banned produce and invasive insects. Detection dogs can often be seen at airports, border crossings and public schools across the country.
Dogs are even being used by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to sniff out illegal wildlife. In countries like Africa, detection dogs are used to map out the illegal ivory trade and rhino horn trade, helping to protect endangered species.
