VICTORIA, Australia — As the saying goes, when one door closes another opens and that was exactly the case for one Kelpie dog who lost her job as a herder, only to find another job she’s actually passionate about. Ruby was bought to work on a farm in Lancefield, when the farmer realized that she was no good at herding the sheep. Yet, instead of finding Ruby another job on the farm or keeping her as a pet, he decided to drop her off at Edgar’s Mission- a local animal sanctuary.

Upon Ruby’s arrival at the sanctuary, it wasn’t long before the staff noticed that Ruby was terrified of human touch. It took a little bit of time to gain her trust, but once they did, they learned what a sweet girl she was and how much she actually loved belly rubs. The sanctuary, which typically rescues farm animals, embraced Ruby and then found a new role for her. Ruby had a knack for doting on the rescued farm animals that were brought to the sanctuary so the staff assigned her the new role of vet nurse.
Ruby immediately fell in love with being a vet nurse, and she now provides the often scarred rescues, all of the love and nurturing they need to heal. When new animals arrive at the farm, Ruby greets them with nothing but love and kisses, making it easier for the animals to transition into their new lives.
