Humane Society International came forward and rescued 23 dogs from being eaten in South Korea. South Korea is one of the few places that farms dogs as meat, just like American’s farm cows. The breeds of the dogs range from Lhasa Apso’s to Malamute type dogs. It is estimated over 2 million dogs are eaten each year in South Korea.
The dogs were flown to Washington and are in Alexandria. Many of the dogs have never had human contact, some of the dogs scream out of fear when being touched. Steps are being made to rehabilitate the dogs so they can later be adopted. The dogs are being assessed and then sent to area animal shelters including: the Fairfax County Animal Shelter, the City of Manassas Animal Control, the Washington Animal Rescue League and Adoption Center, Loudoun County Animal Services and the Animal Welfare League of Arlington.
In an interesting twist, this is one of the first time dog meat farmers have been interested in working with animal welfare organizations. The farmer named Moon Suk Jung, agreed to permanently shut down his farm and accepted money to convert his property into a blueberry farm. The Humane Society is hoping that this will start a trend as they continue their initiative to stop dog meat farming across asia.
