VORONEZH, Russia — A pregnant stray dog was trapped for two days without food or water after she was unknowingly buried alive under heavy stone bricks. Video of her dramatic rescue surfaced online this past weekend.
After pavement collapsed on a walkway in Russia, a pregnant stray dog, named Belka, hid inside the crater where the collapse happened. Without any knowledge of her presence, construction workers sealed the hole— leaving the dog trapped without any food or water.
Residents Aleksandra and her husband Vadim live in a nearby house and they began to hear barking and crying. They couldn’t figure out where the sound was coming from. After some investigation they realized the sound was coming from the newly sealed hole.
The couple tried to get help from local authorities and the housing association but they refused. Desperately, Vadim decides to dig out the hole himself. He is seen in the video pulling the bricks out and digging through the sand with his own bare hands. Finally Belka’s head is discovered.

When she is freed, she wags her tail and leaps toward the crowd that has formed. The crowd greets her with pats and strokes. She is clearly happy to have been saved.
Belka is now in the hands of a local rescue and is doing well. Unfortunately, she lost her puppies because she had been deprived of nourishment for two days.
“I don’t believe that they just failed to notice the dog. It’s not a hamster. The workers probably just didn’t want to make an effort and retrieve the animal. The neighbors also proved to be indifferent. They understood the poor creature got trapped. But who wants to waste their time, getting their hands dirty? No one cared,” she told the local news, Bloknot-Voronezh.
If it wasn’t for the dedication of Aleksandra and Vadim, Belka would have lost her life.
