A UK Policeman has talked of his “elation” at finding his K-9 partner safe and well today, having lost him over a week ago.
The four-year-old German Shepherd named Thames had gone missing during Police training in a rural area, near to a dangerous exposed ledge that offered an 1000 meter drop. Despite extensive searches, there had been no trace of the pup for five days, and the majority of resource had been scaled back on assumption that the dog had fallen to his death.
However, Thames’ handler, Policeman Mike Wakefield, never gave up hope on finding his partner (and beloved family pet) and continued the search this weekend with some heroic colleagues and a volunteer, expert navigator, John McCann.
The team eventually found some paw prints which they believed belonged to Thames, and followed them until they discovered the “ribby” but “in surprisingly good condition” pooch. Initially startled, Thames had to be coaxed out of the bushes with some food, but as soon as he recognized Wakefield he was back to his usual playful self.
Other than a slight limp and being extremely hungry, the German Shepherd had fared incredibly well and is now recovering quickly – Wakefield hopes to have him back catching criminals in no time!
