NEW YORK — Spirit the Pit Bull has been in critical condition since Monday night, after she was picked up off the streets by Fulton County Animal Services with a slit throat. Animal services first received a concerned call from a woman who spotted the dog and described her as having a, “cut around the neck and bleeding very badly.” Animal Services then contacted Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, who jumped at the chance to help Spirit.
Rescue Dogs took Spirit in and performed emergency surgery on the homeless dog but after a severely infected wound opened back up shortly after surgery, they had to transfer her to an animal hospital. Spirit arrived at Fayetteville Animal Hospital where it was determined that she would need at least two more surgeries to close up the wound, which was 3-inches deep.
It is still unclear how Sprit sustained such a deep wound, however the veterinarians involved, believe that all signs point to a person attacking Spirit in a fit of rage. Authorities are still searching for any information that could lead them to the person or people responsible. As for Spirit, she is currently recovering from her second surgery, while receiving IV hydration and antibiotics to help clear the infection. Surgeries such as these cost the rescue thousands of dollars so they rely heavily on the donations of kind-hearted individuals.
