Only in Paris will you find an eccentric and heart touching cemetery dedicated to pets. Created in 1899, ‘Le cimetiere des chiens et Autres Animaux Domestiques’ – which translates to ‘Cemetery of Dogs and Other Domestic Animals’, the cemetery was the city’s response to banning deceased domestic animals to be thrown out in the trash.
Tombstones range from unmarked graves to creative memorials. There are famous animals here and there are unknowns. Everyone from Rin-Tin-Tin, famous war dogs, cuddly cats, to race horses. The cemetery almost closed in 1986 but supporters rallied and kept the site open.
