CLINTON, Iowa— Stray dog River, who was found and rescued last month in Clinton, had something that didn’t seem quite right with his health. After being taken to a local animal hospital it was discovered that the dog had three bullets lodged in his head.
The dog was rescued after it was found running around a local campground by a couple, north of Clinton. When staff at the rescue noticed something didn’t seem quite right about the dog, he was taken to the Veterinarian who took X-rays of his head, it was then discovered that three bullets were in his head. The bullets had most likely been there for at least a couple of weeks. River is very lucky to be alive. It was obvious when he was found that he was not cared for, he was not properly fed, microchipped or neutered, and he was all alone.
After the bullets were found, the Veterinarians did surgery to remove the bullet lodged in his neck, one that was causing an infection and irritation, along with damage to his jaw so that he couldn’t properly open his jaw. The dog will be heading to surgery again to remove at least one more bullet.
Maggie Stafford, who owns a pet bakery in the area, has been keeping an eye on him and giving him the attention he deserves. Once the dog has completed his surgeries, she plans to adopt the sweet dog and give him a good home.
The costs of the surgery could total a whopping $7,000. This is the second time this year that a dog has been shot in Clinton and the first wasn’t as lucky as River. Unfortunately, they do not know who shot the dog. Anyone with information should contact the Clinton police department.
