When David Letterman retires this week he’ll leave behind a lengthy inventory of laughs and memorable guests, some of which included Canadian dogs who appeared on the Stupid Pet Tricks segment of the show.
Letterman had an obvious love of animals that could be seen in both the Stupid Pet Tricks segments and when he had American zookeeper, Jack Hanna visit the show with his variety of animals.
Lexi, a 6 year old border collie/lab cross rescue dog from Calgary was discovered by Letterman producers when the owner Chris Jansen and his wife posted videos of the dog doing tricks on YouTube. Before Lexi’s ladder climbing trick, Letterman knowing Jansen was from Calgary joked “I worked for four years in a row at the Stampede as a pickup rider.”Lexi climbed to the top of a ladder and then swiftly into his owners arms, after which Dave exclaimed “What a dog!”.
Another border collie named Hero, from North Bay, Ontario appeared on the show November 13, 2012. Hero’s trick was barking into a soapy wand making bubbles, Dave thought this trick to be hilarious. What was most memorable about Hero was when he licked Dave Letterman’s face after Letterman pet the dog and in a baby voice cooed “Hello, sweetie, ohhh, what a sweetie”.
Both dog owners said that while they didn’t get to meet the host back stage, Letterman made them feel comfortable onstage.
Chi Chi, from Windsor, Ontario was another Canadian dog to appear on Letterman’s show. Chi Chi’s trick was pushing a kids shopping cart, then tipping cans of beer into it from a table with his paw.
Hero and his owner Sara Carson, went onto tour with the Missouri theatre show, Stunt Dog Productions.
Stupid Pet Tricks was definitely a loved part of Letterman’s show, he’ll definitely be a missed part of late night television.
