As reported by ABC News, Good Morning America, and brought to our attention by our friends at Coupaw:
The FDA recently announced that jerky treats from China have caused almost 600 dog deaths and sickened over 3,000 more. The majority of pets that have been affected are dogs, and the number of illnesses and deaths have risen since January.
The treats in question are sold as jerky tenders or strips made out of sweet potatoes, chicken, duck and dried fruits and have been linked to Chinese manufacturers, according to the FDA.
Despite running more than 1,000 tests and visiting multiple manufactures, U.S. officials cannot find the reason why the foods are making animals sick.
“This is one of the most elusive and mysterious outbreaks we’ve encountered,” Center for Veterinary Medicine Director Bernadette Dunham said in the FDA release.
Hoping to prevent future cases, some retailers have launched self-imposed recalls.
