An elderly dog who had been abandoned and left for dead in a Santa Fe park has been rescued in the nick of time, this week, by ‘House of Cards’ actress Rachel Brosnahan.
The dog, now named ‘Grandpa’ was on the brink of heat exhaustion and had extreme dehydration as a result of being left out in the hot midday sun.
Brosnahan, who has two rescue dogs of her own, noticed the dog’s plight while filming the upcoming series of ‘Manhattan’, and stepped out of filming to provide the dog with some much needed medical attention.
“He kept trying to stand up on his front legs, but his back legs had totally given out… We brought him some water and called Animal Services.”
The actress added that even her own dogs knew something was wrong with the elderly dog; they sat by ‘Grandpa’ in the shade while he drank the water Brosnahan had given him and waited for Animal Services to arrive.
Grandpa was immediately given fluids and medical attention by veterinarians, who were concerned that in his old age, the extreme heat could have resulted in organ failure. Fortunately, there was no sign of any permanent damage – which obviously might not have been the case had it not been for Brosnahan’s quick thinking.
Now back to his happy and healthy self, Grandpa is being looked after by The Kindred Spirits Animal Sanctuary, where he is able to stay for the rest of his days… with a few visits from Brosnahan along the way!
