In Escondido, California, an 8 year old German Shepherd named Jena has reached the rank of Detective. She is the first k9 officer in the department’s history to achieve the rank.
She was born in the Czech Republic, but didn’t start working for the police until 2010 when she joined the Escondido PD as a patrol K9. She’s not just working a desk job either, she’s looking for suspects, narcotics and other forms of evidence. She also assists in apprehending violent offenders and participates in public K9 demonstrations at special events.
Jena has been deployed over 1000 times in her patrol career and found drugs on suspects or in vehicles 88 times . She’s a busy doggie and since she was so active in her career she was going to be retired early, but was still so eager to serve!
“This move is a win for everyone.” Chief Carter
Since she was so lively and so good at her job, she was instead promoted to detective so she could help other detectives with narcotic interdiction without having to endure the physical demands of patrol work.
Chief Carter said he is excited for Jena but wants her know that there are no current vacancies in the Police Administration.
