SHERMAN OAKS, Calif. — When Nana the senior Pit Bull first arrived at the ROMP rescue shelter in February of 2013, her odds of survival were not looking good. The 8-year-old dog was emaciated, dirty, with terribly infected ears and nipples, which hung so low, they indicated that she had over 12 litters to-date. The veterinarian who examined the dog said that she was in a terrible state and that her disfigured ears were likely a result of an at-home ear cropping. It’s safe to say Nana had suffered a tremendous amount in her lifetime.

Yet, despite her terrible condition, the shelter still posted a photo of Nana on their Facebook, in hopes that someone would open up their heart and home to this frightened but sweet girl. That’s when shelter volunteer Stephanie Doris came across Nana’s image, which moved her enough to provide a foster home for Nana while she overcame her medical challenges. The road to recovery was long but after an ear surgery, a bout of chemotherapy, and being medicated, Nana came out alive and happier than ever before. Doris reveals that even though Nana lost her hearing in the surgery, she was much happier than she had ever been living in foster care.

Although at this point Doris had fallen in love with Nana she continued to take the dog to adoption events in hopes of seeing her find a forever home. However, a serious inquiry about Nana months later, made Doris and her family realize just how much they loved the Pit Bull and that they could not part ways with the dog who had become a part of their family. Nana was officially adopted and she currently resides with Doris in Nevada where she is attending medical school. Nana and Doris have also become well-known advocates for Pit Bulls and frequently enlighten individuals about the Pit Bull breed and the euthanasia stats surrounding them.
