Are you looking to buy a turn-of-the-century home and are unsure about what may be lurking within the walls? Give the, appropriately named, Mark Doggett a call! He and his four-year-old border collie Meg and 22-month-old English Springer Spaniel Jess will be there to sniff out dry rot and destructive fungus.
After a 10-year career in construction, Doggett started his company, Enviro-Dogs, and spent 6 months training his dogs to be able to find dry rot and fungus in the walls of your home. If they find it, they will stare and point until Doggett gives them the signal to be at ease, and maybe a treat of two for finding the vulnerable spot. Seeing as this is more of a game for the pooches, some wouldn’t necessarily call it work.
Doggett explains, ““It’s not really work for the dogs – they see it as the best game in the world and they enjoy it because it’s working on their natural instincts. The dogs are so effective because they can detect dry rot at much earlier stages.”
Based in Wolverhampton, UK, Doggett and his pups will come to your private home or be hired by surveyors on commercial lots. Enviro-Dogs rates start at £200 (approximately $300 in the USA).
“It takes a couple of minutes for the dog to search a room. People are slightly dubious when they first hear about us but after seeing what we can do they’re amazed.”
The list of dog jobs grows so quickly. We can’t wait to see what they can do next.
