When the Michigan Humane Society got a call about a stray dog living in a pile of trash in sub zero temperatures, they set out straight away to bring her to safety.
But poor ‘Sweet Potato’, as she became known, had become so afraid and of humans that every time rescue driver Chris Ouwerkerk came to take her to safety, she would run off as fast as possible.
Ouwerkerk refused to give up on the little brown pup and eventually, on a particularly freezing, snowy day, when he approached Sweet Potato curled up in a cardboard box, she was so exhausted by trying to keep warm that she did not run away.
Ouwerkerk managed to convince Sweet Potato to get into the van with him, and once there, he used the vehicle’s heating to warm her up.
However, when they arrived at the shelter, Sweet Potato was still so terrified that she refused to walk with him, and in the end Ouwerkerk carried her in.
Determined to convince her that he wouldn’t hurt her, the big-hearted rescue driver then stayed with the anxious pup in an effort to convince her that no harm would come to her, and that she could trust him.
“She was still scared but she was very, very sweet. Staying real close.”
After receiving medical attention, Sweet Potato made a full recovery, and did not have to spend long in the shelter before being adopted by a new loving family. She is now finally learning to trust humans again in her forever home – with a special thanks to Ouwerkerk!
