EDMONTON, Canada — An Australian Shepherd mix sneaked out her kennel when she heard the cries of two new foster puppies from across the room. All she wanted to do was comfort them and let them know it’s going to be okay.
Maggie, who was recently adopted from the humane society, was spending a few days at Barkers Pet Motel and Grooming when a couple of young foster puppies arrived.
Owner Sandy Aldred settled the puppies in and went out to grab a bite to eat. She has a special app on her phone where she can could on the security cameras in the kennel area. That’s when she saw the strangest thing.
Maggie must have heard the young pups crying when her maternal instincts kicked in. She “let herself out” of her kennel and frantically searched around the other kennels to find the babies.
Once she found them, she plopped herself right down at the door and lay there with them.
“She just decided that was where she was going to stay until we came to get her,” Aldred told the CBC. “It was really sweet. She just had to be with those puppies.”
When Aldred returned from dinner, she let Maggie in to meet and greet with the puppies. Aldred knew there was nothing to worry about. Maggie nuzzled up to the puppies and by the next morning the trio were a certified cuddle puddle.
“The puppies needed her and she needed them. It was pretty perfect,” Aldred said.
When Maggie’s family return to pick her up, they weren’t surprised when they heard the story about the puppies. They told Aldred that at the humane society she had a litter of puppies that were adopted and she quickly took interest in a second litter of puppies.
Now that Maggie has returned to her forever home, the puppies are definitely still getting their fair share of attention.
“A lot of our staff have fallen in love with them, so they’ll take them home in the evenings and let them have a home environment for the night,” Aldred told the CBC.
The puppies are expected to find new homes within the next week.
