The island of Aoshima in Japan has been getting a lot of press recently for being nicknamed, “Cat Island”. The island use to be home to over 900 people (mostly in the fishing industry). Today the human population is down to about 20, with most people moving to the mainland after WWII.

Cats were brought in to help kill mice on the fishing boats. Since WWII the cat population has increased to over 120 cats. Before the recent press, the island didn’t get a lot of tourists as there isn’t a whole lot to do there. Now that the secret’s out, cat lovers from all over the world are coming in just to see the furry felines.
