Last week, Butterbean became famous when the picture below of her chasing a pick-up truck in Slidell, Louisiana went viral. There was a lot of information unavailable at the time, because the Humane Society was trying to piece together what was really going on with this “abandoned” dog.
A woman did come forward claiming ownership of Butterbean, and intended to keep her, but made it clear that she would keep the dog tethered outside. In this event, the Humane Society was rightfully concerned that Butterbean wouldn’t receive proper shelter or veterinary care. So, they offered the “owner” $400 from generous donors to release ownership of Butterbean to them, and the woman took the money. The agreement also stipulates that her former owners must never tether any other animal or allow one to roam freely as they did with Butterbean.
Since then, Butterbean has been given a thorough medical exam and Dr. Riedel (pictured here) has found that she does unfortunately have heart worms and will need to undergo treatment for that. However, Butterbean is in good spirits and will soon go up for adoption. Anyone wishing to adopt her, however, will undergo a full selection process.
Butterbean’s story is thankfully ending happily, but to increase efforts to help the many dogs that are in need of help, the Humane Society of Louisiana has launched the “Butterbean Buddies” campaign. Anyone wishing to donate should check out:
