Meet Laura, a 5-year-old sled dog who is racing her way towards Nome, Alaska in the Iditarod race. What makes Laura different than the other dogs on the team is that Laura is blind in both eyes.
Musher Kelly Maixner, Laura’s owner, says that he began to notice that her eyes were becoming cloudy two years ago. She was brought to a vet and was diagnosed with a cornea disease called pannus. This did not stop Laura however and she still kept going.
Laura is comfortable running in every position on the team, except as the lead dog.
Maxiner says, “She doesn’t seem to mind [her blindness] though and loves to run. She is one of those dogs that gets a full-body wiggle going when she hears or smells someone coming up to her. Although small in stature, she is a kennel favorite for her amazing attitude. Her father, Shane, and her sibling, Big Mike and Flo are on the team as well.”
