WEST SUSSEX, England — An incredibly lucky dog has miraculously survived a 30 ft. jump from an attic window. Remy, a newly adopted, two-year-old Basset Hound survived the ordeal remarkably unscathed, and his owners are crediting one thing: his massive Dumbo-like ears.
Owner Suzanne Lane and her partner Richard Bradley had only adopted Remy about eight weeks prior to his escape attempt. They know that Remy doesn’t care to be left alone, but sometimes they have no choice.
The couple had been attending a concert when they received several phone calls from their neighbors stating the dog had fallen out of the attic window. Several other neighbors rushed him to the vet where they met up with Remy’s owners.
Bradley, a local fireman, thinks that Remy was after the family cat, Otis, who could be seen in the garden below. Remy then decided the best way to join him was out the window. He fell down three stories and landed directly on concrete, but Lane believes the blow was softened by his massive ears. She doesn’t know if they provided resistance and slowed the fall, or if they helped him glide down a bit, but she does know it was a miracle.
At the vet, Lane and Bradley discovered that despite landing directly on his face, Remy had no broken bones. He did suffer from a bruised sternum and partially collapsed left lung for which he was given an hour of oxygen therapy, I.V. fluids, and some pain relievers.
“When X-raying him, we expected many broken bones, internal bleeding, fractures and severely collapsed lungs. but he was pretty much unscathed.”
This gorgeous pup was lucky enough to walk out of the vet’s office the next day. He also proved to his owners what they had realized a week after adopting him when they found him out on the lawn eating their quiche — that despite loving him with all their hearts, Remy was going to be a troublemaker.
